The Soil & Water Conservation department, Mokokchung, has developed 35 vermicompost units in Ungma village.

DIMAPUR — In a boost to sustainable agriculture, the Department of Soil & Water Conservation, Mokokchung, has developed 35 vermicompost units in Ungma village under the Climate Smart Livelihood Development Programme (CSLDP) 2025–26, with funding support from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
According to a DIPR report, the department organised an awareness programme on vermiculture at the DSCO Conference Hall on July 11 for the selected beneficiaries. The programme aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required for the effective management of vermicomposting units.
Following the training, high-quality earthworms were distributed to the beneficiaries to help them begin organic vermicompost production.
During the programme, resource persons highlighted the advantages of vermicompost over traditional farmyard manure (FYM) and other conventional organic soil amendments.

They noted that vermicompost improves soil fertility, enhances crop productivity, and increases the soil's moisture-retention capacity.
Farmers were encouraged to adopt vermiculture practices to promote eco-friendly farming and support sustainable agricultural production in the region.
