Wokha DPDB Chairman Mhathung Yanthan directs NHIDCL engineers and contractors to complete Wokha–Merapani highway works within three months amid concerns over poor road conditions and landslides.
Wokha DPDB raises concern over poor highway condition
DIMAPUR — Advisor and Wokha District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) Chairman Mhathung Yanthan has directed the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) engineers and contractors to ensure that work on the Wokha–Merapani National Highway is completed within three months.
The directive was issued during the monthly Wokha DPDB meeting held at the deputy commissioner’s conference hall on Tuesday, where the unsatisfactory condition of the highway came under detailed discussion.
According to a DIPR report, the meeting was chaired by Mhathung Yanthan and co-chaired by DPDB Vice Chairman and Deputy Commissioner K Mhathung Tsanglao. MLA Mhonbemo Humtsoe also attended the meeting.
The house expressed concern over the poor condition of the Wokha–Merapani highway, particularly delays and shortcomings in the ongoing works.
The NHIDCL officials attributed the difficulties to funding and maintenance challenges, while assuring the meeting that efforts would be made to keep the highway pothole-free.
The meeting also discussed frequent mudslides and landslides along the highway, which have been disrupting smooth traffic movement.
Yanthan directed the NHIDCL engineers and contractors to ensure that the road is cleared and the required works are completed within three months.
He further instructed that regular progress updates be submitted to the DPDB.
The NHIDCL officials and contractors have also been directed to appear before the DPDB again in October for a final review, with Yanthan stressing that the highway must meet satisfactory standards.
During the meeting, ADC Wokha Renbomo Ezung presented the identified site for the proposed district hospital, which was placed before the house.
The DPDB also approved the LADP 2026–27 fund.
The house discussed the Banana Festival 2026 and decided that the festival would be organised on a biannual basis.
Several departments also presented PowerPoint reports. The Excise & Prohibition department reported 96 cases registered, 98 arrests made and fines amounting to approximately INR 1.29 lakh during 2025–26.
The Tourism department highlighted schemes and opportunities aimed at improving tourist experiences in Wokha, while the Nagaland Khadi & Village Industries Board presented its training programmes and activities. The Urban department discussed solid waste management, with emphasis on waste segregation and recycling practices in Wokha town.
Officials from the Lotha Hoho raised concerns over the failure of water supply in Wokha town, warning of its adverse impact on various sectors and establishments.
A detailed project report was submitted to MLA Mhonbemo Humtsoe for further consideration at the higher level.
Following the DPDB meeting, Yanthan and other members visited the District Jail Wokha and Government Higher Secondary School, Wokha.
At the District Jail, Yanthan appealed to government departments to extend support for the development of the facility.
He appreciated the sanitation arrangements inside the cells and the overall cleanliness of the jail compound.
Yanthan said imprisonment should also provide an opportunity for rehabilitation and transformation, with the jail serving as a place for reflection and reform.
The Wokha District Jail currently houses 29 prisoners.
