KOHIMA — Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday informed the Nagaland Assembly that a total of 1,305 candidates have been recommended for appointment by the Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) through six recruitment examinations conducted since 2023.
The chief minister stated this while responding to a starred question raised by MLA Naiba Konyak during the ongoing eighth session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly in Kohima.
Responding to a query on the educational background of successful candidates, Rio said 92 candidates (7.05%) out of the 1,305 recommended by the NSSB had completed their matriculation from government schools, while 428 candidates (32.79%) had graduated from government colleges.
On the number of candidates selected for appointment to various posts, he said 428 candidates from government college backgrounds have been selected since 2023. He added that 467 candidates from government school backgrounds were also selected for appointment, of which 92 were High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) holders and 375 were Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) holders.

Regarding measures taken by the state government to facilitate employment opportunities for students from government institutions competing with those from private institutions, he said the government does not have any separate policy specifically for such candidates.
However, the chief minister noted that the Higher & Technical Education department and the School Education department have undertaken several initiatives aimed at improving employability and skill development.
Under higher education, Rio said government colleges have established career guidance cells and organise programmes such as alumni talks, career guidance camps and mentoring initiatives.
Colleges also offer certificate and diploma courses in computer applications, enabling students to apply for competitive examinations such as those conducted by the NSSB immediately after graduation.
Additionally, skill enhancement and value-added courses have been introduced to improve students’ employability.
In the School Education sector, Rio said the department has launched various programmes to strengthen students’ foundational learning and competencies.
These include the Nagaland Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) initiative for activity-based learning, the Nagaland Literacy and Numeracy Fest, and project-based learning at preparatory and middle stages to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
He also highlighted the introduction of competency-based learning and assessment, vocational education under Samagra Shiksha, and state-level job fairs aimed at providing employment opportunities for vocational students.
