DIMAPUR — In a deeply distressing incident, a 10-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a shopkeeper at New Market in Dimapur.
According to a police source, the victim’s family lodged an FIR at the Women Police Station, Dimapur, on Sunday evening, July 6.
The source confirmed that the accused is in custody, but refrained from disclosing further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

Responding to the incident, the Gaon Bura (GB) of New Market Ward-19, Khekishe Aye, issued a press statement strongly condemning the act.
“Such heinous acts against innocent children are unacceptable and should be condemned by all. The incident not only tarnishes the reputation of New Market but also raises serious concerns about public safety,” he said.
He further assured that New Market authorities would fully cooperate with the police and take preventive steps. He called for enhanced security in the market, including CCTV surveillance, awareness campaigns on child safety, and regular police patrolling.
“We are committed to ensuring that New Market remains a safe space for all—especially for children and families who visit daily,” he added.
