Deputy CMs TR Zeliang and Yanthungo Patton mourn Niketu Iralu’s death, remembering his lifelong commitment to peace and reconciliation
DIMAPUR — Deputy Chief Ministers TR Zeliang and Yanthungo Patton have mourned the passing of Naga peace activist, educator, writer and social reformer Niketu Iralu, describing his death as a significant loss to Nagaland and the wider peace movement.
Zeliang described Iralu as “a towering figure” who dedicated his life to building bridges, fostering understanding and guiding people towards peace, particularly through the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR).
He said Iralu’s wisdom, humility and unwavering commitment to peace and reconciliation would remain etched in the history of Nagaland. “His passing is a monumental loss to our people,” Zeliang stated, conveying condolences to Iralu’s family, loved ones and all those mourning his death.

Patton described Iralu as a dedicated voice of “peace and reason”, noting that he chose the path of non-violence, dialogue and mutual understanding throughout his life.
According to Patton, Iralu devoted decades to healing divisions, bringing different groups together and encouraging people across communities to listen to one another with open hearts.
He also cited Iralu’s contribution to peace efforts in the region and abroad, saying his honest approach and lifelong dedication to reconciliation earned him respect across sections of society as well as national and international recognition.
Both deputy chief ministers conveyed condolences to the bereaved family, relatives and admirers of Iralu and prayed for strength and comfort for them during the period of grief.
