[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Zeliang community in Peren district has floated an earnest appeal to the security forces to stop raiding houses and harassing people. The Zeliang People’s Organization issued a press release on Wednesday stating the appeal and accusing the security forces, particularly the 18th Assam rifles, of “unwanted pillaging”.
The organization has also appealed to the district administration of the district to check the activities of the security forces.“The apex organization of Zeliang community, Zeliang People’s Organization has made an urgent appeal to all the security forces, especially the 18th Assam Rifles of Jalukie to shun house raiding and manhandling in Jalukie town and its surrounding villages, for creating fear psychosis in the minds of peaceful citizens and perturbing the tranquil atmosphere of Peren district,” the note from the community organization stated.
The district administration is also asked to start taking action to check the ‘unwarranted pillaging’ and safeguard the rights of the public of the district on priority. The Zeliang community lamented that the “friends of the hills people” –the thematic motto of the Assam rifles– were now slowly turning into “enemy of the hills people”.
“It further urged the district administration to check these unwarranted pillaging in safeguarding the rights of the general public in the district as their first priority. It is disheartening to state that, the Assam
Rifles calling themselves as, ‘Friends of the Hills People’ turning into ‘Enemy of the Hills People’” the Zeliang organization stated in the press release.
