Kohima, Feb. 10: Stating that given the opportunity and the right platform, member of the Lok Sabha Neiphiu Rio has said that the youth can play an effective role in fostering peace and in building a just and better world.
Speaking at the launch of a three-day Kohima chapter of the Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN) at the G Rio School this evening, Rio said ‘the wisest investment we can make in on our youth.’
Appreciating the policies and visions of the MUN, the former chief minister said it was the young minds that are capable of ‘formulating new hopes and ideas to bring about solutions to many vexed issues.’
According to Rio, it is the youth who are ‘better equipped and capable of carrying out research; they can create awareness among their peers whereby many lives can be positively impacted with the right knowledge and influence.’
Also, stressing on the importance of motivating the youth by giving them space to ‘prove their worth,’ Rio said it was important to instil in the young minds the right attitude and positive mindset ‘under a cordial environment so that they become valuable assets to the society.’The MP also lauded the efforts of the IIMUN to encourage the students to discuss national and local issue apart from international issues through critical thinking, teamwork, debating and writing skills. He said it will go a long way to inculcate in them a sense of responsibility and ownership in the making of a global citizen.
Rio urged the students to actively participate in debates for ‘fruitful and meaningful discussions’ which he said would contribute to ensuring a ‘brighter future for all.’
The IIMUN’s director general, Harshi Shah and Secretary General Rishi Jain will be the resource persons for the programme.
The IIMUN is an organisation based in India which conducts simulations of the United Nations and Indian Parliament in various cities. They offer platforms to students to discuss topics of national and international interest in order to make more and more students get interested in diplomacy and workings of governments.
The founder of the MUN, Rishabh Shah, aims to get India ‘its rightful place’ at the international stage.
It has also organised a conference inside the United Nations Headquarters, New York in August 2016.
At IIMUN, various issues are discussed by students and luminaries including matters such as the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai, the effects of demonetization in India, and the threat that ISIS has become.
