
Dimapur, Feb. 18 (EMN): District legal services authorities under the aegis of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) conducted awareness programme on “Nagaland victim compensation scheme 2012” with youth and women organisations in different parts of the state.
The scheme was introduced for the purpose of compensation to the victims or dependents who have suffered loss or injury as a result of crime and who require rehabilitation, an update from NSLSA stated on Tuesday.
On February 15, Kohima DLSA conducted a legal awareness programme on “Nagaland victim compensation scheme 2012” at Sumi Aphuyami Baptist Church, Kohima, with the youth.
Speaking at the function, district retainer lawyer Sunjib Rana stated that the scheme was not to compensate victims for crime or compensate the loss suffered but aimed at providing hope and security to the victims of such unfortunate incident. The scheme mainly focus on women/children victims of crimes including rape, murder, domestic violence, trafficking, he mentioned adding even men folks are victims of such crimes.
Rana also pointed out that most of such crimes are not reported or kept hidden due of fear or social stigma and for which victims were not delivered justice.
Panel lawyer Nagali Shohe, who spoke on cyber law, mentioned sections of IT Act which included crimes and punishment of cyber crimes, while panel lawyer Aketoli J Yeptho spoke on the activities of legal services authorities.
Awareness on Motor Vehicle Act was shared by panel lawyer Mika H Aye.
More than 130 youth attended the awareness programme.
On February 15, Kiphire DLSA organised a seminar on the same in the conference hall of the deputy commissioner, Kiphire, with youth and women organisations of different churches in Kiphire district.
Resource person and DLSA secretary, N Kano informed that the scheme was framed on December 18 for availing compensation fund to the victims who suffered loss or injury as a result of crime. He stated that the maximum limit of compensation ranges from INR 200000 to INR 20,000 depending on the nature of loss or injury. In included loss of life, rape, loss of any limb or part of body resulting in 40% handicap, rehabilitation etc.
He urged the participants to convey the message to others.
Panel lawyer Kunyangli Sangtam shared on the aims and objectives of free legal service and free legal aid to marginalised section of society. A total of 41 persons attended the programme.
On February 13, Peren DLSA organised an awareness programme at Jalukie B in which retainer lawyer Asungbe Retainer highlighted on the working of legal services authority while panel lawyer Italang spoke on "Nagaland victim compensation scheme 2012" and panel lawyer Asuni spoke on domestic violence.
Around 30 beneficiaries attended the programme.
On February 13, Mokokchung DLSA conducted an awareness programme at Yimyu Baptist Church with the women organisation on "Nagaland victim compensation act 2012.’ Resource person and retainer lawyer I Imkong Jamir spoke on domestic violence act 2015. Altogether, 47 persons attended the programme.
On February 6, Longleng DLSA conducted awareness programme cum consultative meeting with Tamlu ad-hoc town committee and president of Phomla Hoichem, Tamlu unit, at Tamlu town.
Panel lawyer P Monyei Phom spoke on “Right to legal aid” and how DLSAs assist the underprivileged to avail justice.
The town committee executive led by its chairman and president of Phomla Hoichem, Tamlu unit, appealed to set up a legal aid clinic in the sub-division.
