public rally at Pungro town on Saturday.
- KOHIMA — The Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC)
held a public rally on Saturday at Pungro town in Kiphire district to protest
the proposed border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border. The rally also
sought the restoration of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) in its entirety.
- Following the rally, the YTC submitted a representation to
the union home minister through the additional deputy commissioner of Pungro.
- The representation expressed grievances over the government
of India's February 6, 2024, announcement to scrap the FMR and the proposed
construction of border fencing along the India-Myanmar border in Nagaland.
- The council reiterated that the ancestral territory of the
Yimkhiung Nagas has been divided by the “arbitrary and imaginary” international
border pillars, serving as a testament to the forceful division of the
Yimkhiung people.
- Opposing the Indo-Myanmar border fencing, the YTC maintained
that the Yimkhiung people on both sides of the border share ancestral lands and
that erecting a border fence amounts to snatching away their traditional,
customary, and human rights.
