DIMAPUR — The Yimkhiung Akherü Arihako (YAA) and Tikhir Students' Union (TSU) have kept in abeyance the joint ultimatum submitted to the state chief secretary pertaining to the 25% Backward Tribe reservation in government jobs.
In a joint press release, the YAA and TSU informed that the ultimatum has been temporarily put on hold in deference to the appeal made by the Yimkhiung Tribal Council and Tikhir Tribal Council.
“Their appeal seeks that they will endeavour to address the matter with the government, prioritising the interests of both communities while fostering unity among all on this ongoing auspicious occasion,” the release stated.
It may be mentioned that earlier on November 25, the two student bodies had submitted an ultimatum to the chief secretary concerning the state government's alleged failure to implement its notification dated Mar. 23, 2022, and the Guwahati High Court (Kohima Bench) judgement order dated September 29, 2023.
Iterating that the reservation policy is a provision intended to uplift educationally, socially, and economically disadvantaged communities and tribes, the two student bodies, however, termed the government's inaction in implementing the reservation policy in its entirety as a deliberate attempt to degrade the Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribes.
“It is imperative that the government takes immediate action to implement the reservation policy in its entirety, ensuring that the Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribes receive the benefits they are entitled to.
“Anything less would be a betrayal of the trust placed in the government to uphold the principles of social justice and equality. In seeking justice for the injustices meted out by the government towards the Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribes, the YAA, TSU, and our citizens will pursue and initiate all available measures to secure justice,” the release added.
