Dimapur, March 6 (EMN): The Wildlife division of Dimapur observed Wildlife Day on March 3 with the theme “Listen to the young voices.”
The program was held at Pherima ‘A’ village, a note from the organisers informed on Monday. Representatives of village councils, and GBs; youths, students; and staff of the wildlife wing attended the event, it was informed.
Officials from the Wildlife wing “enlightened the gathering about the threat to wildlife, its importance and their role in maintaining ecological balance and how to safeguard it from extinction,” the press release on Monday stated. Further, they urged the village elders and teachers from the area to “inculcate into young minds” a “love, affection and appreciation for wildlife.”
The officials explained the implication of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and other similar acts of the government to the gatherings.
Representatives of the village informed the department that all forms of hunting and poaching had been banned in their jurisdiction and assured of “renewed support, cooperation and coordination with the department in effectively tackling the wildlife crimes,” the press release explained.
As part of the Wildlife Day event, participants signed a pledge to “always be kind and compassionate towards all wildlife and to endeavour to fulfil human responsibility to protect and care for wildlife.”
The programme concluded with a distribution of crayons and pencils to every participating student.
On December 20, 2013, at its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly decided to proclaim March 3, the day of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as World Wildlife Day, which was proposed by Thailand, to celebrate and raise awareness about the world’s wild fauna and flora.
