KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 28
Nagaland, along with the rest of the world, observed World Rabies Day on Monday by spreading mass awareness and conducting anti-rabies vaccination camps across the state.
World Rabies Day is observed worldwide on September 28 which commemorates the death anniversary of Louis Pasteur who successfully trialed the first rabies vaccine 130 years ago, and seeks to continue the work he started toward global rabies elimination. The day is marked by hundreds of events involving millions of people raising awareness of the disease and its prevention. The Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) coordinates World Rabies Day and works with international organisations, governments, and stakeholders across the medical and veterinary sectors to bring about true and lasting change.
In Kohima, the Nagaland State Veterinary Council (NSVC), the department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry and the Kohima Municipal Council launched the World Rabies Day programme at Veterinary Hospital, which was followed by a free anti-rabies vaccination camp at different locations in the town.
Speaking on the occasion, NSVC president, Dr. David Sema asserted that the department is trying its best to control rabies, however, he underscored the need for joint efforts from every individual to end the dreadful and dangerous disease together.
Kohima Municipal Council superintendent, Zakiekhotuo Kiso in a brief address said the municipal body will be initiating registration of dogs for the first time in Kohima. He appealed to all the ward panchayats and the Veterinary & Animal Husbandry department to extend necessary support towards the success of the registration process.
He also informed that the KMC will be conducting training and seminar on rabies, where two persons from each ward will be trained for further dissemination of information.
NSVC registrar, Dr. IP Khala highlighted the objective of observing World Rabies Day. He also stated that a people’s movement is needed to address and bring down rabies.
Later, the chief Veterinary & AH officer Kohima, Dr. Vivotuo Miachieo tendered the vote of thanks.
Anti-rabies vaccination camps conducted at various colonies across the state capital included Tinpati, High School, KMC office, Agri/Forest, Chandmari, Lerie and Officers’ Hill.
