Kohima: On World Environment Day, Lok Sabha MP Supongmeren Jamir led a plantation drive at New Reserve, Kohima, under the 'Clean and Green Nagaland' project, funded by Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLADS) scheme 2025-26.

In his address, Jamir stated that Nagas have good personal hygiene but poor civic sense when it comes to environmental hygiene. He emphasised the importance of maintaining environmental cleanliness just like personal hygiene, stressing that it directly impacts one's health."
The MP also stated that natural calamities like landslide and shortage of water is common issues in the state of Nagaland. He said that all these are because they do not protect the nature and he also pointed that drinking unclean water is the reason why many health issues are rising in the state.
We need to plant more trees so that the state will be clean, green and people can enjoy the environment, he added.
The MP also highlighted Nagaland's common issues like landslides and water scarcity, attributing them to neglect of nature, and underscored the need for environmental protection, citing links between unclean water and rising health issues.

In another programme organised by the Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) at its office in Kohima, Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA, urged the people to inculcate responsibility for their own waste.
He appreciated the initiative of the AYO and the participation of youth volunteers from various colonies.
Stating that World Environment Day (WED) comes once a year, he called upon the participants to be retrospective of their actions and celebrate every day as World Environment Day. He urged them to reduce pollution by fighting against plastic use, practicing afforestation, and minimising unnecessary consumption of energy and power—factors that contribute to environmental pollution.
Kesosul Christopher Ltu, president of AYO and Miss Nagaland 2024, also spoke on the occasion.
Various institutiona and organisations in Kohima district including Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, Rotary Club Kohima and Government High School (GHS) Bayavȕ, and TaFMA along with Eco Green Club of Baptist College, Master Peace Nagaland and Silviculture Division, also commemorated the day.
Mokokchung: The World Environment Day celebration in Mokokchung was observed with a spirited roadmap ‘Trade waste for green,’ an initiative proposed by Nuklutoshi, MLA, and DPDB chairman, rallying departments, schools, and communities to transform Mokokchung into a model for sustainable living by exchanging sapling for waste.

The programme was held at DC’s conference hall on the theme ‘Ending plastic pollution globally’ and slogan ‘Let’s beat plastic for a greener Mokokchung.’
Nuklutoshi hailed the initiative as a “modern-day battle cry,” emphasising people to lead the roadmap to a circular economy in Mokokchung.
“This isn’t just another Environment Day. Mokokchung is taking a bold step towards becoming plastic-free,” he asserted, saluting the municipal council, Forest department, youth, NGOs, and residents for their commitment. He urged consistency, stating, “Every great change begins with small steps.”
According to the DPDB chairman, the campaign mandates monthly deposits of segregated plastic waste at the Mokokchung Municipal Council’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF), likened to a “bank” for cleaner streets and healthier soil.
Special invitee, TN Mannen, Advisor for Law & Justice and Land Revenue, called for collective action to prevent environment degradation and challenged the denizens to make Mokokchung the first district in state to become “Plastic Free District.”
Theme speaker LH Thangi Mannen said that, “plastic pollution is everybody’s concern not an individual concern. We are all pollution generators.”
The programme was followed by Green pledge led by Dr. Sentitula, Divisional Forest Officer, Mokokchung.
The District Congress Committee under ‘Clean and Green Nagaland’ project funded by MPLADS 2025–26, also conducted a mass cleanliness and plantation drive at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex and Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital, followed by dustbin distribution to schools and colleges.
A Congress official said the initiative aims to inspire grassroots action for sustainability. Concurrently, DEF Mokokchung, alongside the Family Welfare Unit and C/173 CRPF, organised a plantation drive at Police Reserve to mark the day.
Dimapur: Hundreds of students took out an environmental awareness rally in the streets of Dimapur on the theme ‘Beat plastic pollution’ The students along with the organising groups marched from Town Hall to Clock Tower and converged at the State Stadium near DC Court junction.

The rally was organised by the Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) in collaboration with the Team Better Dimapur and endorsed by the district administration, Commissioner of Police and Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC).
Team Better Dimapur president Mhonjan Humtsoe, in his opening note, said that the intention behind the environment awareness walk was to display “that we care about Dimapur, our environment and the world.”
Humtsoe emphasised that involving the students in the rally was to create awareness on the importance of waste segregation, as this practice will also make the works of the DMC easier.

He implored upon the students to practice waste segregation in their institutions, homes, and neighbourhoods.
DMC CEO Thungchanbemo Tungoe emphasised that plastic pollution has infiltrated ecosystems, food chains, and human bodies, stressing the need to discourage plastic use.
He pointed out that the extensive use of plastic reflected a lack of civic sense. He noted that despite yearly observations of World Environment Day and various activities, people still failed to practice what they preached.
Dimapur SDO (Civil) emphasised that the plastic crisis is a collective problem, requiring everyone's role and contribution to create a habitable environment. He added that without public cooperation and civic sense, issuing orders alone wouldn't suffice to overcome the plastic crisis.
Tapsi Upadhyay, aka 'BTech Pani Puri Wala,' also participated in the Dimapur event as part of her 'Sampoorna Bharat Yatra,' a Mission Healthy Bharat initiative promoting climate awareness, health literacy, youth empowerment, and animal welfare.
Yanathung Kithan, Scientist ‘B’ at NPCB, emphasised that collective effort and individual responsibility in waste segregation can significantly reduce plastic pollution.
Eden Higher Secondary School, Ram Janaki HSS and Khiamniungan Students’ Union Dimapur also observed the day.
Peren: Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang on Thursday said that it is the bounded duty of every citizen to protect environment and called for a collective effort to end any kind of environmental pollution.

Speaking at the World Environment Day programme organised by the Peren Division Forest department at Peren district headquarters, Zeliang said observation of the day should be a clear reminder of “our shared responsility of protecting environment and make the earth a healthy place for man to live,” an update stated.
He also stated the plastic is useful to human but at the same it has many detrimental effects and called upon the gathering for collective efforts to put and to plastic menace.
“Ending plastic pollution is a critical challenge and unless collective efforts are given, it will be very difficult to end its menace.
“Peren district is christened as ‘Green District,’ hence in order to live upto its name every denizen of the district should contribute in preserving ecology and environment of the district,” he added.
Meanwhile, a culmination programme to mark the end of a two-week celebration of World Environment Day 2024 was organised the by Intanki National Park in collaboration with eco-clubs from nearby villages, at Manglumukh.
The main outcome the programme was the constitution of the club called ‘Stewards of Intanki,’ a club comprising youth and eco-club members from fringe villages, dedicated to environmental protection and conservation.
