Dimapur, April 26 (EMN): With an aim to ensure effective legal assistance to children who comes in conflict with law or are in need of care and protection, Dimapur District Legal Services Authority (DDLSA) conducted one-day training workshop on juvenile justice system at conference hall, District Court, Dimapur on April 26.

l lawyers, Para Legal Volunteers, police, children homes, labour department, Juvenile Justice Board, Child Line, ICPS, MSW students, Child Welfare Commission, women cell and social workers attended the workshop.
Delivering the keynote address, limasunep Jamir, Commisioner of Police Dimapur, gave an overview of the Juvenile Justice Act and highlighted certain infirmities in the working of the act. He also briefed on the importance of The Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO Act).
Police Commissioner also handed over a compensation award of Rs. 1 Lakh as Victim Compensation under Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme 2012, sanctioned by Relief and rehabilitation branch, Home Department to the retainer lawyer Nathaniel Kevichusa.
Resource persons; R. Limhathung Ezong, Legal Aid Counsel and Trainer of NSLSA; Esther K. Aye, Legal Aid Counsel and Trainer of NSLSA and Limasenla Longkumer, Legal Aid Counsel and Trainer of NSLSA, spoke on spoke on Juvenile Justice Act 2015, Child labour/illicit trafficking and POCSO Act ICPS respectively..
A similar workshop was conducted by Phek District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA) on April 26.
Speaking on Juvenile Justice System, Akumla Longchari, Master Trainer NSLSA highlighted on the aims and objectives of Juvenile Justice Act 2016, such as the procedures, roles, responsibilities and functions of Juvenile Justice Board, Special Juvenile Police Unit, Child Welfare Commission and all the stakeholders in connection with the juvenile in conflict with law and in need of care and protection under the act.
She also informed that through the child friendly legal services to children and their protection scheme the National Legal Services Authority aim to improve access to justice for children.
Akumla Longchari said that the main purpose of the schemes is to facilitate the proper implementation of the existing legislations and policies in favour of children which already exist, such as POCSO Act, JJ Act, prohibition child labour. She appraised that such act would ensure effective legal assistance to children who come in conflict with law or are in need of care and protection.
N. Longshithung Ezung, chairman of PDLSA and District and Session judge spoke on on POCSO Act.
A practical session on juvenile justice system was conducted by the co-ordinator followed by group activity dealing with juvenile cases.
