DIMAPUR, JUNE 20: “Women's reservation in local civic bodies has been widely misinterpreted in the media while the final verdict still pending before the court. And so far, there is no indication that 33% women reservation will be implemented in the municipal elections. The department will see which way the elections can be best conducted.”
This statement was made by Parliamentary Secretary for Municipal Affairs, Economics & Statistics, R. Tohanba during the inauguration of roads here at Jasokie Colony, United North Block, Burma Camp on Monday.
The legislator also pointed out that state government has lost Rs 59 crore during the 13th Finance Commission as the funds were not released to the state in the absence of elected members of urban local bodies. Not disclosing the name, the MLA held a section of people responsible for not cooperating and due to which election to urban local bodies could not be held.
Despite of fund shortage, Tohanba said, the Department has been initiating developmental activities and expressed the hope that problems would be resolved and peaceful elections held.
Lauding the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) for working hard towards development of Dimapur, Tohanba expressed his satisfaction and appealed to the public to extend their cooperation. He also added that the toll taxes being collected are used for visible development in the town.
The legislator also said, though Kohima could not make it in the first two ‘Smart City’ lists, the state capital will be applying for the third round selection. DMC Administrator, H. Atokhe Aye said the council has been able to provide basic facilities in the town with the trust of the government and cooperation of ther public. Atokhe also maintained that DMC has been executing works as per their promises and will continue to with the development work in the town.
Taking opportunity to remind the public on the ban of non-biodegradable carry bags in Dimapur, Atokhe insisted that public should have a civic sense to use biodegradable bags.
It may be noted that the road at Jasokie colony was the 16th one constructed by DMC in 18 months. The total area of the road constructed is 494x6=2964 sq.m.
