Dimapur, Oct. 17 (EMN): Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Dimapur and Phek celebrated “Mahila Kisan Diwas” (Women Farmers’ Day) to recognize the contribution of women farmers.
KVK Dimapur: KVK Dimapur, ICAR-RC for NEH Region, Medziphema organised one day programme on Oct. 16, with ADC Medziphema Vikhweno Chale as chief guest.
A daylong programme began with welcome note from Joint Director In-charge Dr. Lohit Kumar Baishya. He appealed women farmers to sustain the farming and other activities and develop themselves up to the level of entrepreneur.
Chale in his speech urged womenfolk to learn business ethics and start their own enterprise. She asked the women participants to form Self Help Groups (SHGs) but should trust each other to sustain the group for longer time with honesty and hard work. She also advised them to have the vision for future so that they can look after their family and state. Also to protect the environment, she also requested the women farmers to continue organic farming.
Progressive farmer and recipient of Jagjivan Ram Abhinav Kisan Puraskar, (Zonal Level) 2010 Alemla Therieh encouraged other women farmers to contribute towards nutritional securities being mothers. She said “we play an important role in society, let us feed our children healthy food.”
Since cultivation in Nagaland is mostly organic, she said one should preserve “own seeds” for further cultivation without using chemicals.
Alemla Theriah also shared her experience of making aloevera soap and how she started her vermicompost production with 10 numbers of earthworms at Naga United village, Dimapur district.
Veikhochong Misao, a recipient of Mahindra Samriddhi Agri Award, 2012 as National winner Krishi Prerna Samman, Lady of the Year- 2012, shared her experience on how inter-cropping of turmeric and Jhum paddy is profitable as inter-crop in pineapple to get additional income during fist year, as pineapple bears fruit only in second year. Thejano Makritsu recipient of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Antyodaya Krishi Puruskar (Zonal), ICAR, 2016-17 said integration of dairy, poultry, maize, pulses, and horticultural crops are profitable and for the same she was awarded for development of Integrated Farming System.
Principal Scientist and head KVK Dimapur Dr. Anamika Sharma congratulated the winners for getting the certificate of appreciation. To mark the day competition such as fruits, vegetable, processed products, handloom and handicrafts were organised for women Self Help Groups (SHGs).
A total of 19 individual women farmer/SHGs participated in showcasing their produces during the celebration of Mahila Kisan Diwas. Officials from ATMA Dimapur and Department of Horticulture and ICAR Research Complex and women farmers attended the programme.
KVK Phek: KVK Phek celebrated ‘Mahila Kisan Diwas’ at KVK conference hall, Porba Village on Oct. 17.
On the occasion, guest of honour, Assistant Headmistress GHS Porba Adele Lohe shared on women empowerment in the field of higher education, agriculture and allied activities. She also encouraged the women farmers to produce quality seeds of local germplasms and its preservation.
A brief note on role of women in agriculture and allied activities was shared by Dr. Rinku Bharali, where he emphasized the importance of womenfolk in the overall development of the society.
The formal programme was followed by seed distribution and extempore speech on topic “Role of women in agriculture”.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Hannah Krujia, Pudatsolu invoked God’s blessing while Dr. T Esther Longkumer welcomed the gathering and Liza Barua Bharali proposed vote of thanks.
