‘Assembly move undermining the voice of the people in the State’
Dimapur, November 23: Expressing shock over the motion in the 14th session of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on November 22 on the matter of according 33% reservation to women in urban local bodies, the Naga Hoho called the exercise “not less than undermining the voice of the people in the State”.
In this connection, the Naga Hoho has made its last appeal to all the members of the present Assembly to consider this vital social issue with all seriousness before passing the resolution for revocation of the resolution adopted on September 22, 2012. It predicted that the revocation of the resolution is bound to bring severe social unrest and disharmony among different Naga tribes while imposing various provisions under the Constitution of India by discarding the rights of the Naga people guaranteed under Article 371A of Indian Constitution.
“The strong opinions of the civil societies and all Tribe Hohos opposing the Municipal Act of 2001 and 33% women reservation which are a simple replication of other states in the mainland have fallen on deaf ears,” the Naga Hoho said in a release issued by its communication cell on Wednesday. It said the motion was moved to seek the adoption of the resolution by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly for revocation of the resolution which was passed under Article 371A(a) of the Constitution of India on September 22, 2012 which exempted Nagaland from the application of Part 1XA of the Constitution of India in ULB elections.
According to Naga Hoho, the Naga very fact that there is no opposition in the present NLA does not entail that the voices of the people who are concerned about protecting their rights should be strangled. Therefore, the Naga Hoho said it has been advocating to all sections of Naga society, especially the NLA, to exhibit magnanimity and ensure that the 33% women reservation does not bring divisions among the people of the State resulting in creation of an unmanageable situation.
It also strongly felt that the State Government’s attempt to implement the Municipal Act of 2001 and 33% women reservation is too hasty and will create only chaos and unwanted situations for which the 14th session of the 12th NLA shall be held responsible.
