'Women for tree' campaign begins across nagaland

Government officials along with women self help group members during a pre-site visit for plantation drive under ‘Women for trees’ campaign in Dimapur on Friday.


  • DIMAPUR — As part of ‘Women for trees’ campaign, officials from Dimapur district urban development agency along with eminent women self help groups (SHG) made a pre-site visit to IHSDP Housing Complex in Burma Camp Friday to assess the area for suitability and number of trees to be planted in and around the complex.

  • ‘Women for trees’ campaign, an AMRUT Mitra initiative launched by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is an effort to combine environmental sustainability with women’s empowerment in urban areas. The campaign is being carried out under AMRUT Mitra in convergence with DAY-NULM under Urban Development Department.

  • The visit to IHSDP Housing Complex was the phase-I campaign which began on May 21 and concluded on Friday. The second phase campaign would begin on June 5 coinciding with World Environment Day and continue through the monsoon season until August 31.

  • During the visit, the SHGs have suggested the type of trees that could be undertaken for plantation around the complex area. The team was led by Ekumyala, city nodal officer, along with other DUDA officials.

  • In a related programme, the Mokokchung district urban development agency, in collaboration with the AYANU Self Help Group (SHG) made a pre-site visit to Kathing Park in Mokokchug town on May 21.

  • The purpose of the visit was to assess the suitability of the proposed location for a tree plantation, with a focus on evaluating the site’s condition, feasibility and preparedness for the activity.

  • During the visit, members actively participated in planning discussions, emphasising the value of green spaces and pledged to take responsibility for the care and maintenance of the saplings post-plantation.

  • A total of nine members from the SHG were present and fully engaged in the review process.

  • In another programme, seven representatives from Fressia SHG visited Yungphang Resort in Tuensang town for plantation drive on Friday.

  • Similarly, the Phek district urban development agency with a local self help group, Muho SHG of Phek town, conducted its first phase exposure visit to the under construction site in CMHSS compound in Phek town on May 22.

  • The visiting team was led by assistant urban development officer of Phek, Kesoweu, who informed that a total of 150 trees would be planted during the drives in and around the park.

  • The officer stated that women, acting as Amrut Mitras or ‘friends of the trees’ will take charge of caring each saplings- ensuring regular watering, protection and monitoring of growth.
