Dimapur, Jan. 12: A protest rally was carried out on Thursday, January 12, at Bhandari town, under Wokha district, by local community organisations against what has been reported as murder of a woman on January 8. The dead body of a woman was said to have been found inside the staff quarters of the 7th NAP battalion at Bhandari.
Various organisations including the ‘BTLH, BTEH, LLRPO, BTSU, LLRSU,’ Mhankai Okho Bhandari town, Sungro Range Union Bhadnari Town, and students from various schools of Bhandari, representatives from the 7th NAP Bn. Hq. and the public participated in the protest rally, a press release from the local organizers stated on Thursday.
“The purpose of the protest rally was to condemn the January 8th incident where the dead body of lt. N. Nchumbeni Jami was found murdered in a decomposed state inside the staff quarter of 7th NAP Bn. Bhandari and the culprit/s be arrested at the earliest and award befitting punishment as per the law,” the BTSU and the BTEH stated in the press release.
The organisers informed that the rally commenced from 8:00 am from the State Bank of India junction, where the participants held up banners and placards that carried slogans denouncing the alleged murder and demanding justice.
After an invocation prayer by Kenneth Kikon, youth director of the BTBE, the protestors marched through the 7th NAP camp area and returned to the junction where leaders from various organisations spoke in condemnation. They demanded arrest of the culprit at the earliest to award them punishment as per the law.
The leaders also addressed and promised to the government that any possible co-operation in curbing the accused will be initiated by the general public.
The protest rally culminated around noon in the premises of the ADC office in Bhandari where the protestors submitted a memorandum addressed to the Home Minister of Nagaland demanding effective action in nabbing the accused.
An ultimatum for seven days was also served to the government to arrest the accused. It warned that failure to arrest the accused would force the public to take an own course of action.
The representation from the community also demanded adequate relief to the victim’s family.
