Traffic Control Unit in Wokha conducts surprise checks, penalises helmet violations, and clamps vehicles.
WOKHA — The Traffic Control Unit in Wokha intensified its enforcement drive and public awareness campaign in Wokha town on Wednesday, conducting surprise checks on two-wheeler riders for helmet violations and clamping vehicles parked in restricted areas.
Traffic In-Charge N Eyingo Lotha said that despite repeated awareness programmes and warnings, many riders continue to disregard traffic regulations.
During the inspection, several riders were found travelling without helmets, while some were also found carrying more passengers than permitted.
Eyingo informed that first-time offenders were penalised with a fine of INR 1,000 and issued a warning. He cautioned that repeat offenders would face stiffer penalties, which could extend to legal action, including imprisonment under applicable provisions.
He also warned parents and individuals involved in school transportation activities against carrying children beyond the permitted passenger limit on two-wheelers.

The traffic official highlighted concerns over obstructions along the national highway passing through Wokha town, stating that construction materials dumped on roadsides and improperly stationed vehicles continue to hinder traffic movement. He noted that a joint inspection conducted earlier by the district administration, police, and the traffic department had already issued directives for the removal of such obstructions.
Eyingo said the authorities may be compelled to initiate enforcement measures to remove the obstructions if those responsible fail to comply with the earlier warnings. He added that traffic clamps are being used against vehicles found parked in restricted zones as part of the department's efforts to ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
Appealing to the public to remain vigilant and law-abiding, Lotha also expressed concern over incidents of underage driving in the district. He reminded citizens that underage driving is a punishable offence and warned that strict action would be taken against violators.
