Y Vungthungo addressing the media at his office in Wokha on
Monday.
WOKHA — Y
Vungthungo, senior principal at Government Higher Secondary School, Wokha,
participated in the National Conference on Successful School Leadership 2025,
held in Delhi from January 8 to the 10th.
The conference, themed "Exemplary change and
innovation," brought together 57 resource persons who spoke on various
topics, he informed media persons at his office on Monday.
Vungthungo spoke on leadership for skills-based and
vocational education. He expressed gratitude to Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome,
advisor for School Education, Nagaland, the commissioner secretary for
Education, and Nagaland Samagra Shiksha for their support.
The event was organised by the National Institute of
Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) under the initiative of the
National Centre for School Leadership (NCSL) and funded through Samagra
Shiksha.
The conference saw the participation of scholars, writers,
and school administrators from across the country.
He explained that participants were asked to submit case
studies in writing and via video conferencing for selection by the central
committee, where he was chosen to represent the state of Nagaland.
His main objective, he highlighted, was to implement new
approaches rather than follow traditional systems of disciplining students and
teachers. He emphasised the importance of recognising attentive students and
awarded the "Best Student of the Month" for each class and section.
Additionally, he began acknowledging the most regular
teachers at the end of each year, highlighting the need to appreciate
well-disciplined teachers. Besides the school motto, he introduced an annual
school theme, setting targets to achieve and motivating both teachers and
students.
Vungthungo also mentioned that many students in government
schools come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, which limits their
opportunities to explore their talents. To address this, he initiated a talent
hunt in 2018 to identify and showcase students' abilities, providing them with
platforms to perform on various occasions. He reminded that this has since
become an annual programme held at the end of every academic session.
He expressed that participating in the conference was a
dream come true, acknowledging NIEPA as a prestigious platform where ideas are
gathered and presented to the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance for
implementation in school curricula.
Furthermore, Vungthungo highlighted that one government
school attending the seminar informed participants that it had received INR 3 crore
from stakeholders and civil society for the promotion of the school in 2024. He
urged society not to rely solely on government funds but to come up with
innovative ideas to make government institutions centres of learning and
excellence.
He called on youths and intellectuals to take a serious
interest in school education in Nagaland, emphasising the need to convert ideas
into actions.
