DESO Wokha conducts training to promote timely birth and death registration and strengthen the online Civil Registration System.

DIMAPUR — The Department of Economics & Statistics Office (DESO), Wokha, conducted a block-level training and sensitisation programme on the Registration of Births and Deaths Act and the online Civil Registration System (CRS) at the DESO conference hall, Wokha, on October 15.
The programme aims to strengthen awareness, ensure timely registration of births and deaths, and improve implementation of the civil registration system at the grassroots level across Wokha district, a DIPR report stated. The training will continue in various ranges and blocks of the district in the coming days.
Deputy Director of Economics & Statistics department, David Khutso, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the objectives of the programme and the importance of birth and death certificates in the digital era.
He stated that these documents are essential for establishing legal identity, accessing government services, and maintaining accurate demographic records.
He also underscored the responsibilities of registrars, village councils, and Anganwadi workers in ensuring proper registration, cautioning that negligence and irregularities in the process may invite legal consequences.

Economic & Statistics Officer Telalou Mero conducted a detailed PowerPoint presentation on the step-by-step registration process under the online CRS.
He explained that births must be registered at the place of occurrence within 21 days, while deaths must be registered at the place of death within the prescribed timeframe.
He further outlined the procedures for delayed registration and the additional requirements that may apply, emphasising the need for timely compliance with the law.
The training covered the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders in the registration process.
Registrars were sensitised on ensuring accurate records and timely data entry, while village councils were encouraged to promote awareness and assist families with the necessary documentation.
Anganwadi workers were also urged to support families, particularly in rural areas, in ensuring the prompt registration of newborns.
The programme further highlighted the legal provisions governing birth and death registration, stressing the importance of accuracy, accountability, and compliance with the prescribed procedures.
Officials emphasised that birth registration safeguards a child's legal identity and facilitates access to education and future entitlements. Similarly, death registration is essential for processing inheritance claims, pensions, and other social benefits.
The sensitisation programme seeks to minimise irregularities, promote timely and accurate registration, and strengthen the digital civil registration system throughout Wokha district.
