WOKHA — The inaugural Wokha District Futsal Championship 2026, organised by the Wokha District Football Association (WDFA), got underway on Friday at Arena X in Wokha town, with 14 teams competing for the title.
Addressing the inaugural programme as special guest, Yanrenthung Humtsoe, president of the Wokha District Sports Association (WDSA), welcomed the launch of the tournament and said futsal has emerged as one of the fastest-growing sports, contributing to the promotion and development of football in Nagaland and across India.
He observed that Wokha district is witnessing growing enthusiasm and talent in football and encouraged the association to continue promoting the sport. Humtsoe also urged players to remain committed and disciplined, while avoiding intoxication and other unhealthy practices that could affect their performance and careers.

Appealing to stakeholders and spectators to support the players, he said discipline and active participation in sports can help strengthen communities and foster positive social change. He further called on all participating teams to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
Speaking at the programme, WDFA president N Samuel Ezung informed that the championship is being organised under the directive of the Nagaland Football Association (NFA).
He said 14 registered teams are taking part in the district's first futsal championship and added that the champions will represent Wokha district at the 5th Nagaland Futsal Club Championship 2026, scheduled to be held in June and hosted by the Football Association of Tseminyu District.
Earlier, the invocation was pronounced by Robolo Shitiri, CCM of St. Paul's Parish, Wokha. The tournament was formally declared open with a ceremonial kick-off by the special guest.
