Dimapur, Oct. 7 (EMN): The Forest division of Wokha conducted an extempore speech competition in commemoration of Wildlife Week 2018, at Mount Tiyi College in Wokha on October 5. The superintendent of Wokha police, K Manoj Kumar was the special guest during the occasion.
According to a press release, the competition was conducted not only to spread publicity about the conservation of forests and wildlife but also to help students develop confidence and make them understand how they can each contribute to the cause.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Prabhat Kumar, who explained about how the celebration of wildlife week in India started, while elaborating the importance of forest and wildlife conservation.
During the competition, participants spoke about various topics ranging from renewable energy, climate change, role of students in forest and wildlife conservation, importance of trees and honeybees, Amur Falcon conservation, and human-elephant conflict among others.
According to the updates, the first prize was won by Rakhal Roy of B.A. first semester, second prize won by MhonchanJungi of B.A. fifth semester, while the third prize went to Meribemo Patton of B.A. fifth semester.
The updates mentioned that the special guest of the event, Kumar spoke on the theme, “Big Cats – Predators under Threat.” Kumar stated that Nagaland should have been a home to big cats but the prevalent practice of hunting which was deeply rooted in the culture of the Nagas made it impossible for them to dwell.
Kumar encouraged the students to spread the message of conservation of forests and wildlife to their families and friends and to be agents for its protection.
