- DIMAPUR — A
21-day winter school titled ‘Farm-to-fork approach for strengthening Mithun
(Bos frontalis) value chain and doubling the income of tribal farmers of
Northeast India’ got underway at ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun (NRCM)
in Medziphema on January 16.
- The programme, which would run from January 16 to February
5, aims to address critical aspects of Mithun value chain development,
empowering tribal farmers of Northeast India through innovative strategies,
stated an update from ICAR-NRC on Mithun.
- The inaugural function was attended by Dr. Suresh S
Honnappagol, former Animal Husbandry Commissioner, former ADG (Education) and
former vice chancellor of Karnataka Veterinary, Animal, and Fisheries Sciences
University (KAFASU), as the chief guest.
- In his address, Dr. Honnappagol emphasised the significance
of enhancing the Mithun sector's value chain and praised the active
participation of women in the winter school. He encouraged the participants to
leverage the unique opportunity.
- Dr. H Kalita, head of regional centre, ICAR-NEH, Nagaland,
who attended the inaugural programme as the guest of honour, highlighted the
importance of integrating local knowledge with modern scientific practices to
create sustainable Mithun farming systems.
- Resource person, Dr. Nagappa K, associate professor and head
of KVFASU, Hassan, Karnataka, shared his expertise on livestock value chain
management.
- Presiding over the function, Dr. Girish Patil S, director of
ICAR-NRC on Mithun and course director of the winter school, provided an
overview of the Mithun sector in India. He emphasised the pivotal role of
Mithun in tribal livelihoods and its potential to contribute to the economic
uplift of tribal communities.
