The Wildlife Crime Control Unit (WCCU), Dimapur, Nagaland, during routine patrolling duty has seized various wildlife items that were sold along National Highway-29 since September, 2015. According to a press note from Wildlife Division, Dimapur, this includes bushmeat of barking deer and wild boar, one yellow throated marten, one common palm civet, two hoary bellied squirrels, four green pigeons, two partridges, one khalij pheasant and nine birds. While the bushmeat and dead seized animals were disposed off by burning in the presence Wildlife Warden and other Forest officials, two live moles which were seized on 10th December, 2015 were safely released at Nagaland Zoological Park, Rangapahar on the very same day. These seizures were made on November 7, November 25, November 26, December 4 and December 10, 2015. Further, the Wildlife Crime Control Unit urges the public to abstain from hunting and demand of wild animals and birds as such offences can invite fine or imprisonment or both, as per Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, it added. Also reminder may be made that for those villages indulging in destroying local environment and wildlife, the various grants and assistance to them by the State Govt. through various schemes will be curtailed. This is as per directive of the Chief Secretary and Director, Rural Development vide Letter No.CSO/1/GEN/2013 and No.DRD/NR/P-1/2002 respectively, the press release said.
