DIMAPUR — The Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) condemned the bullying
and assault of a young woman, expressing outrage as footage of the incident
circulates on social media platforms.
In a press statement, the WSYF stated that this violent and
cowardly act is not only a gross violation of human dignity and safety but also
a chilling reminder of the moral decay that allows individuals to dehumanise
others with impunity.
Stating that it stands in complete solidarity with the
victim and her family during this traumatic time, the WSYF added that no one
should ever be subjected to such vicious humiliation, violence, and
psychological harm—least of all by a mob of aggressors whose actions
demonstrate a total lack of conscience, empathy, or respect for human life.
It demanded that law enforcement agencies act immediately
and prosecute every individual involved to the fullest extent of the law. It
also called upon all social media users to urgently remove all circulation of
the video to prevent further trauma to the victim and to halt the spread of
violence as entertainment.
"We call upon the public, especially members of the local
community and the youth, to come forward with any credible information that can
aid in the swift identification of the individuals involved in the heinous
act," the statement read.
The front said that it is fully committed to cooperating
with the administration and law enforcement agencies to ensure that every
perpetrator is tracked, arrested, and prosecuted under the full weight of the
law.
The Western Sumi Students' Union (WSSU) also condemned the
act, stating that such incidents, frequently surfacing on social media, are
deeply disturbing and unacceptable in any civil society.
"The horrific assault carried out by individuals of the same
peer group against a young girl is both inhumane and deeply reprehensible. This
act is a gross violation of human dignity, safety, and the fundamental right to
live without fear. It is imperative that the perpetrators are brought to
justice without delay," the union said in a note.
It urged the law enforcement authorities to swiftly identify
and apprehend those responsible and added that justice must be served not only
in accordance with the law but also in a manner that sends a clear message—such
acts will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
"Bullying and harassment of this nature inflict long-lasting
psychological trauma on the victim and foster a climate of fear in society. We
call upon all concerned stakeholders—community leaders, educators, and institutions—to
work collectively to prevent such incidents and to promote a culture of respect
and safety for all," it concluded.
