- DIMAPUR — The
Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) has decided to undertake census of
immigrants residing in western Sumi areas and to hold discussions with the Sumi
frontal bodies in this regard. The survey was aimed at monitoring influx of immigration
and ensuring identification in case of any untoward incidents.
- This was informed by WSSU president, Ikato Khulu, during a
press conference held at its office in Dimapur on Thursday. He highlighted
important matters concerning the union’s initiatives and recent development.
- The president also raised concern with regard to widespread
sale of liquor and the unregulated operation of bars, discotheques and lounges
in Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland, despite imposition of Nagaland Liquor
Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act of 1989. He questioned whether the authority or
administration has given permission to open such shops and restaurants.
- The union demanded the authority to make to known whether
those shops and restaurants are functioning with permit, if not, what steps
have been taken to control the situation.
- The president also expressed concern over the condition of
multi-disciplinary sports complex (MDSC) in Dimapur, which is turning into an
open-field dating spot and place for all anti-social activities. He added that
the state stadium would have benefitted many Naga youth had it been completed
on time. He, therefore, urged the authorities to take necessary steps.
- The WSSU general secretary, Vitoka N Rochill, urged all
western Sümi students and working individuals residing outside the state to
register with the union through their respective area student bodies so that
they could establish a structured network for better communication in order to
ensure safety and well-being of members by providing timely aid in case of
unforeseen incidents.
- Rochill also asserted that Cigarettes and Other Tobacco
Products Act (COTPA) Act 2003 should be seriously implemented. He urged all the
shopkeepers not to sale tobacco products within radius of 100 meter near educational
and medical establishments.
