DIMAPUR — The Western Sümi Students’ Union (WSSU) has raised concerns about the recurring devastation caused by floods during the monsoon season, attributing the ongoing hardships faced by the public to the government's failure to develop a proper drainage system in the state.

"Each year, especially during periods of heavy rainfall, numerous households are severely affected by flooding. Despite this, no concrete measures have been taken to mitigate or manage the situation," stated WSSU in a press release on Wednesday.

While lamenting the recent tragic loss of lives due to flooding, the union expressed the belief that such tragedies could have been prevented with effective drainage systems and other necessary infrastructure in place. They conveyed their condolences and expressed solidarity with the bereaved families.

WSSU strongly urged the state government and local municipal and town councils to coordinate efforts and take swift action to address those longstanding infrastructural deficiencies. They emphasised the need to prioritise the establishment of a reliable and well-planned drainage system to reduce the risk of floods and loss of life.

The union also appealed to the state government to provide financial compensation to the families of the deceased, as well as to those who have suffered property losses due to the floods.

"This is not a time for blame; it is a time for unity. We must come together as a community to support one another and work collectively towards a society that guarantees essential public utilities and infrastructure for all," the union added.

Meanwhile, WSSU called upon all concerned civil society organisations (CSOs) and the public to remain firm and united in demanding proper infrastructure and long-term solutions from the government, rather than only reacting after each disaster occurs.
