- DIMAPUR — The
Western Sümi Students' Union (WSSU) has urged the Government of Nagaland to
take immediate steps to upgrade Khelhoshe Polytechnic Atoizu (KPA) to a
full-fledged engineering college, thereby fulfilling the long-overdue
commitment.
- Established in 1972, WSSU stated that KPA has played a
pivotal role in shaping technical education in Nagaland by producing skilled
professionals in various fields. It added that the institution received
National Board of Accreditation (NBA) approval in 2021 for its mechanical,
civil and electrical and electronics engineering courses for three years under
the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
- Recognising its potential, it stated that the Nagaland cabinet,
in a meeting held on December 17, 2007, approved to upgrade KPA’s diploma
courses to a degree-level engineering college. It pointed out that despite the
decision no concrete action has been taken, leaving the matter unresolved for
nearly two decades.
- “With the growing demand for quality technical education and
the limited number of engineering institutions in the state, the need for KPA’s
upgradation is more urgent than ever. Transforming KPA into a degree
engineering college will not only benefit aspiring students but also contribute
significantly to the state’s technological and infrastructural development.
Moreover, it will help retain local talent, reducing the need for students to
seek engineering education outside the state,” WSSU said.
- The union has appealed to the chief minister and the
government of Nagaland to immediately implement the 2007 cabinet decision and
upgrade KPA to a full-fledged engineering college without further delay. It
expressed confidence for a positive response and necessary action at the
earliest.
