DIMAPUR — The Western Naga Youth Front (WNYF) has expressed alarm over the recent revelations concerning the alleged mishandling of a reported theft case and the conduct of certain police personnel.
In a statement, the youth front termed the revelations as deeply disturbing, raising serious questions about the integrity, accountability, and credibility of the law-enforcement system.
“This matter must not be dismissed as a minor incident involving only the loss of a mobile phone. Its implications extend far beyond a single case and strike at the very foundation of public trust in the police institution,” the WNYF stated.
“If unofficial negotiations, monetary settlements, or discretionary closures of cases are indeed taking place, it creates a dangerous precedent. It raises grave concerns about how other cases including motor-vehicle theft, assault, rape, or even murder may have been handled.”

It added that the possibility of justice being influenced by money or personal discretion is alarming and unacceptable in a society governed by the rule of law.
“Citizens approach the police in moments of vulnerability, expecting protection, fairness, and lawful action. When those entrusted with enforcing the law are themselves suspected of compromising it, the damage extends beyond individual victims; it erodes public confidence, delegitimises institutions, and weakens the moral authority of governance itself,” the youth front maintained.
Extending support to the Dimapur Rengma Youth Organisation for the demand for an immediate, independent, and transparent inquiry into the incident and any similar practices, the WNYF insisted that accountability must be swift, impartial, and visible.
It further stated that where wrongdoing is established through due process, action must go beyond temporary suspension or routine departmental measures.
“Termination of service should be seriously considered in order to preserve and protect the dignity, respect, and public trust vested in the police force.
“Restoring confidence requires more than assurances, it requires decisive and exemplary action. Upholding integrity within law-enforcement is not merely an administrative duty; it is a moral and constitutional obligation essential to the protection of justice and society at large,” the front added.
It may be mentioned that serious allegations of misconduct and corruption have surfaced against police personnel of East Police Station in Dimapur following claims that a recovered stolen mobile phone case was allegedly “settled” through unofficial payments.
In a press statement, the Dimapur Rengma Youth Organisation (DRYO) stated that the incident dates back to October last year, when a young woman filed an FIR after losing her mobile phone, but police allegedly didn't act on it.
The phone was later found, and the person in possession claimed to have bought it for INR 2,500. Police then allegedly demanded INR 19,000 from him, later reduced to INR 12,000, and let the person keep the phone without resolving the case or informing the victim.
