DIMAPUR — Sano Vamuzo, recipient of the prestigious Baptist World Congress Quinquennial Human Rights Award conferred by the Baptist World Alliance (BWA), was warmly received at Dimapur airport on her return from Brisbane, Australia, on Monday.

The civic reception, organised by the Western Chakhesang Hoho (WCH), was attended by well-wishers and community leaders, an update stated.

Former General Secretary of NBCC, Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho, gave a brief introduction to the 23rd BWA Congress and shared the significance of the award.

Vamuzo expressed heartfelt thanks, sharing about the goodness of God and acknowledging the support of her former and present colleagues throughout her journey.

NBCC, NPF congratulate Vamuzo

The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) and the Naga People’s Front (NPF) congratulated Sano Vamuzo on being conferred the Baptist World Alliance (BWA) Quinquennial Human Rights Award for Lifetime Achievement during the 23rd Baptist World Congress, held in Brisbane, Australia, from July 7 to the 12th.

“Any recognition of such magnitude is never conferred lightly. It is a testimony earned through decades of tireless service, marked by personal sacrifice, visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to justice, peace and human dignity.

“This prestigious global honour stands as a resounding affirmation of Smt. Sano Vamuzo’s remarkable legacy, both in Nagaland and across the world,” the NBCC stated in a press release.

The NBCC went on to state that Vamuzo has been a bold voice for the voiceless and a steadfast advocate for women's empowerment.

“As the founding member of the Naga Mothers' Association (NMA) and the first Chairperson of the Nagaland State Commission for Women, her life’s work reflects an unshakeable resolve to uplift the marginalised and to promote a culture of peace rooted in compassion and truth. She is widely respected not only for the offices she held, but for the sincerity, wisdom and strength she consistently brought into public life,” the council added.

In a separate press release, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) termed the global recognition as a fitting tribute to a remarkable woman who has devoted her life to championing the rights, dignity, and empowerment of women and the marginalised, inspiring generations towards building a more compassionate, inclusive, and just society.

According to the NPF, Vamuzo holds a pioneering place in the history of Nagaland as the first Chairperson of the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) when it was instituted in 2007.

“She has since remained a towering figure in advocating for women’s representation and leadership not only in the state but also at the national and international levels,” it stated.

“It is worth noting that in 2024, she was also conferred the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, in recognition of her distinguished service in the field of Social Work.”
