DIMAPUR — The department of Land Resources conducted watershed yatra campaign in Anakiyimesen village under Mokokchung on February 17.
A DIPR report stated that the welcome address was delivered by chairman of Anakiyimesen village council, while the keynote address presented by district project officer of Land Resources department, Sentinungla.
The land and water conservation pledge was administered by the SDO (Civil) and Border Magistrate of Tuli, Nukshimatong. In his speech, Nukshimatong spoke about the detrimental effects of human activities on the ecosystems and highlighted how unscientific coal mining, single-use plastics like packaged water bottles, polythene bags and the use of chemical weedicides and pesticides are causing significant harm to water bodies, soils and plant life.
He emphasised that change should begin at an individual-level and urged the villagers to cease the use of those harmful products and practices. He further called for collective action to ensure the well-being of the community and sustainable development of the region.
The event also featured cultural performances including a skit by students of the Government Primary School and a folk dance by the youth department of Anakiyemsen Baptist Church.
Jentiren Jamir, Femina Miss India Nagaland 2024, also delivered a short speech by inspiring the audience with her message of community engagement and environmental stewardship.
Other segments of the campaign involved activities such as display and sale of self-help group (SHG) products, showcasing local craftsmanship and entrepreneurship.
The afternoon session was focused on Shramdaan activities, where the Anakiyimsen watershed committee was engaged in soil and moisture conservation works near the watershed site.
It concluded with handing over of assets related to the watershed site by the DPO of Mokochung.
