DIMAPUR — A watchtower-cum-waiting shed at Tangha village under Longleng district was dedicated on December 23.

According to a DIPR report, the structure was constructed by Hamphe Phom, pastor of Tangha Village Baptist Church and family in memory of their parents and siblings.

Phom, in his exhortation, said that his lifelong desire to make a significant contribution to the community was satisfied and expressed his gratitude to the village council for supporting the endeavour.

He said that while he was glad to see the waiting shed standing, he was also greatly inspired to know that they have locals with the same level of expertise as other workers. He pleaded on the occasion that wealthy people build waiting sheds or other facilities for the entire community to use rather than just building cemeteries.

He observed that people borrow large sums of money to build cemeteries when they could always use the money to create memorial plaques commemorating the dead, which they could place in the common rooms as a remembrance.

He also mentioned that nowadays, the Naga people are fond of constructing large homes with all the amenities in big cities. However, he urged everyone to understand that it is always a good idea to maintain a nice home with a pleasant view, even in their villages.

According to him, the monument was built not only as a place of remembrance but also as a place for the community to come together and rest, and the village council was given ownership of the monument.
