The Committee has drawn the attention of the authorities on public nuisance due to late night operation of food carts and stalls along the path from Clock Tower to Popular Bakery junction. While appreciating the ‘dignity of labour’ practised by many local youths in running those food carts/ stalls and making their living, the Committee however pointed out that some issues such as food safety, traffic laws, hours of operation, waste management, neighbourhood compatibility, checks on anti-social activities etc. need to be immediately streamlined.
The Committee, in a press release issued by its convenor, D Jonah Achumi, and the secretary, Omega G Naga, apprised the civil administrations, police, and municipal authority that numerous complaints have already been made in the past, particularly in relation to the events and activities that occurred when those food carts/stalls are permitted to operate until nearly the early hours of the morning with little to no time limit. It also mentioned about traffic problem on the aforementioned road segment as a result of the disorderly and unlawful parking techniques used by those food carts/stalls. It added that numerous complaints have been received from the residents as the path to their respective home are blocked with food carts or stalls during the night, making it difficult for them to move.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=1]In view of the aforementioned circumstances, the Committee requested the authorities take action and develop some feasible solutions as well as impose certain regulations and limits in the areas.
Meanwhile, the Committee has suggested regulating hours for food carts and stalls to open; allocate specific parking places to lessen or prevent congestion; proper disposal of garbage; food safety and public health; verifies any illegal activity; not to impede movement of pedestrians; and not to allow tables and chairs on the footpaths.
