- DIMAPUR — On a chilly December morning, as the
holiday season brings a break from school for most children, a group of young
performers gathered at the NEZCC Stone Park.
- Instead of spending their time on typical seasonal pastimes,
these children are honing their skills in traditional songs and dances.
- Known as Woniro Von, meaning tender voices in the Lotha
language, the group of 12 children is dedicating their time to learning and
performing Lotha cultural songs and dances for a performance on December 22.
- Formed in October 2024, the troupe’s members, aged 8 to 11,
include Suzane Ovung, Noyingbeni Mozhui, Rachel Ngullie, Nzanrhoni Shitiri,
Chonchani Shitiri, Chichumla, Wonchilo Tsanglae, Meriyani Tsanglae, Khonzani
Tungoe, Mhavungi Odyuo, Zadeno Tungoe, and Esther Tsopoe. Together, they represent the youngest cultural ensemble
affiliated with the North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC).
- “Our aim is to inspire the new generation to engage in a
greater cause, using their voices as instruments to narrate the past history of
our culture,” said Meri, an elder who mentors the troupe.
- According to Meri, the troupe’s journey began with a
performance during a community ‘Cultural Sunday’ event in October.
- An NEZCC official, impressed by their talent and dedication,
brought the group under the organisation’s fold.
- Since then, Woniro Von has performed at three major events,
with their next appearance scheduled for December 22 at the NEZCC Stone Park.
- “It’s rare to see such young children embrace their heritage
with such enthusiasm and commitment,” the NEZCC’s programme director told this
newspaper.
- On Saturday, Eastern Mirror caught up with the group during
their practice session.
