DIMAPUR — At least three civilians and a paramilitary personnel were injured after protests against alleged encroachment on protected tribal land turned violent in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district on Monday, prompting police to open fire, NDTV reported.
The situation escalated sharply when protesters allegedly set fire to the residence of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang at Dongkamukam. Visuals showed flames and thick smoke billowing from the premises, triggering panic among local residents.
According to NDTV, violence broke out after police attempted to stop protesters from marching towards Ronghang’s residence. As the crowd refused to disperse, security personnel resorted to lathi-charge followed by firing to bring the situation under control.
Protests had been continuing for several days against an eviction drive in the area. Members of the Karbi tribal community have been demanding protection of their ancestral land, alleging encroachment by non-tribal settlers.

Tensions intensified on Sunday after police detained seven protesters from the agitation site, an action that reportedly sparked fresh outrage among locals.
On Monday, thousands of indigenous people marched from Kheroni towards Dongkamukam, demanding the immediate release of the detained protesters.
As part of the agitation, protesters also blocked roads in Kheroni, disrupting traffic movement. The administration deployed heavy police and security forces across sensitive areas to prevent further violence.
The situation in West Karbi Anglong remains tense, with authorities keeping a close watch on developments.
