Dimapur, June 17 (EMN): The Forest department and Vishepu Village Council have jointly organised an awareness programme of conservation and protection of forest and wildlife to mitigate human-animal conflict and wildlife crime on June 14 in the village council hall. A press release received on Sunday from the chief wildlife warden informed about the event.
The extra assistant commissioner of Satakha in his welcome address stressed on the need in conserving natural resources for future generation on sustained basis.
Conservator of forests, northern territorial circle, Y M Jami said that the earth is the only liveable planet in the universe and forests and wildlife play an important role in addressing issues of climate change, food and water security, and environment amelioration in addition to tangible benefits in different forms, and thus sustaining the existence / survival of the earth.
Stating that sustainable forest management is an important component for sustainable development, he appealed the participants for protection and conservation of forest and wildlife for meeting needs of future generations.
Chief Wildlife Warden Satya Prakash Tripathi in his keynote address talked abou the genesis of the human-animal conflict prevalent in the state in general and elephant problem in Wokha district in particular.
He highlighted the policies of the state government and the MoEF & CC, GoI, New Delhi for addressing the problem. He gave a presentation on importance of forest & wildlife, scenario of forest and wildlife in Nagaland, concept of community reserves.
Tripathi called upon the people to come forward in declaring their forest as community reserve and contact forest officials in case of damage of their crop / properties / human life.
He also spoke on wildlife crime, applicability of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, tranquilising unit in the department in tranquilising wild animals in human habitations, compensation against crop / property damages by wild animals.
Further, he highlighted the association of 111 battalion of BSF Satakha in plantation and nature conservation.
The head GB of Vishepu village appreciated the efforts of the 111 battalion of BSF Satakha for various developmental activities in the village. He requested the department to address village problems by making frequent visits.
Commandant of the 111 battalion, Sanjeev Sharma also called for nature conservation.
The programme was attended by officials from the district administration, Forest department, 111 battalion of BSF Satakaha, Ministry of Home Affairs, GoI and villagers from Vishepu, Xuyizi, Kivekhu, Khukiye, and Satakha.
