Kohima, Sep. 17 (EMN): Defending champions Vanguard FC came from behind to beat Kohima district champions Khriekesa FC 2-1 in the quarterfinal match at the ongoing Captain Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament (state level) here at the Kohima local ground on Monday.
Captain Yhanshalo Kemp came to the rescue for Vanguard team again; as he scored the winning goal in extra minute time to help his team enter the semi-finals.
Kwetelhi Thopi’s goal for Khriekesa FC was not enough as the team conceded a late goal in the injury added time for Sanyem Konyak to score and take the match into the extra time.
Yhanshalo then found the back of the net in the 84th minute during the extra time. The goal was enough as the team held on for the win and proved costly for Khriekesa team as they suffered a defeat against the defending champions and was knocked out of the tournament.
While Kimiyeto Assumi, the captain of Green Club, Zunheboto scored four goals as they overpowered Longleng District Club 5-0 to enter the semi-finals.
Green Club relied on set pieces to score and poor defending for Longleng team helped the team to score four goals successively in the second half. Assumi scored in the 48th, 53th, 66th and 77th minute and Mughahuto Chishi added a goal in the 68th minute.
Vanguard FC will take on Green Club FC in the first semi-finals match on Tuesday.
At Tsiese Basa ground, Naga Terriers Jakhama thumped Xavierite FC Peren 6-0 in their quarterfinal match. Chingsha Phone, Khampei and Khekiho scored two goals each in the first half. Xavierite failed to breach the defensive line as Naga Terriers won the match by a big margin.
Nerhema Village FC came from behind to beat DGP team 3-2 during the encounter. It was the DGP team who took the lead in the first minute through Muluvoto. Nerhema FC fought back and Salu Kulim pulled back the equaliser six minutes later.
Lima scored in the 10th minute to take the lead again for DGP team but Petevizo Kezieo found the back of the net in the 17th minute for Nerhema FC to make it 2-2. Shurhosul Zhotso then scored the winning goal 49th minute in the second half to end the match in their favour.
Nehrema FC will take on Naga Terriers in the second semi-final match on Tuesday.
