USD 81.5 million for World Bank's ELEMENT project in Nagaland

- DIMAPUR — With the conclusion of its tripartite negotiation
meeting and subsequent approval by the World Bank, the ELEMENT (Enhancing
Landscape and Ecosystem Management), Nagaland Project is set to be implemented
in 225 villages in the state.
- “With a total budget of USD 81.5 million, the project will
be implemented over 5 years in 225 villages across 15 districts”, stated a
press release received here on Wednesday.
- The project, financed by the World Bank-International Bank
for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), aims to promote sustainable
landscape management in Nagaland and will be implemented by the Society for
Climate Resilient Agriculture in Nagaland (SoCRAN) under Agriculture Production
Commissioner Cell (APC Cell).
- According to the press release, the key components include
building capacities for integrated landscape management to promote sustainable
use of natural resources.
- The project will work towards restoring degraded landscapes
to improve ecosystem services, intervention on agriculture-based livelihood
including spring shed management, soil conservation, and carbon sequestration.
- Other components include enhancing value chains for high
value forest and farm products to promote economic transformation and improve
livelihoods and establishing a robust project management and monitoring and
evaluation framework to ensure effective implementation and impact.
- “By adopting a holistic landscape approach, the project aims
to empower forest-dependent farming communities to make scientifically informed
decisions, restoring forests, preserving biodiversity, and promoting
climate-resilient agriculture and livelihood-support activities,” the press
release stated.
