No amount of clarification can justify the US’ attack on Venezuela. It is nothing but another addition to its long history of dislodging regimes of unfriendly nations.
No matter what clarification the US issues to justify its act in Venezuela, it is nothing but another addition to its long history of dislodging regimes of unfriendly nations. As a matter of fact, over the years, the US has made it a habit to deprive smaller and weaker nations of their sovereignty, setting the stage for a prolonged internal strife which only leads to destruction. After the failures in Iraq and Afghanistan, many thought the US would think twice before taking up such steps because involvement in prolonged wars has considerably weakened the country’s economy. But from the Venezuelan development, it is now clear that the country has not learnt from its failed attempts to dominate sovereign countries by force. This time too, within hours of the midnight attack, US President Donald Trump declared that his regime would run Venezuela till transition, which means the US would run the show in this oil and mineral-rich country by installing a puppet administration.
The US has claimed that the detained Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is one of the kingpins of narcotics-terrorism that threatens to destabilise the region, which necessitated the attack. But several global watchers are of the view that the US sees a threat in Maduro’s growing proximity with countries like Russia, China and Iran among others, with whom Washington has bitter-sweet relations. Secondly, by attacking Venezuela and issuing warnings to some other countries, the US has also made its intentions public- to act against the nations that are not using petro-dollars to purchase oil, a clear move to curtail the growing presence of Chinese Yuan in the energy market. It may also be noted here that to prevent Maduro from hobnobbing with countries not friendly with the US, both Washington and European nations have stopped recognising the Venezuelan regime since 2019. The US has even rejected Maduro’s offer to open up the country’s oil, gold and business to American business houses and to reverse its oil exports to China, Iran and Russia. The US has not shown any inclination to consider these proposals and instead showed its preference for imperialist dominance by clearly violating the UN charter which is completely against any attack on sovereign countries to change regime.
Thus, there is an urgent need to put pressure on the US administration to abide by the UN charter which is considered as the bedrock of peace since the Second World War. India has already made an appeal to resolve the issue through dialogue. Many other peace-loving nations have expressed similar opinions. But so far, the US has not shown any intention to respect the global views; rather Washington is issuing threats to countries like Cuba, Mexico and Greenland either to toe its line or get ready to face the consequences. If the US continues to be driven by geo-economic interests instead of respecting the sovereignty of other nations, the prevailing global order will vastly be disturbed. A combined effort by the nations is needed to prevent the spread of such militarist neo-colonialism.
