DIMAPUR — The
first Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) under the National Urban Health
Mission (NUHM) was inaugurated on Monday at Zaklom Ward, Mon town, with the aim
to address the health concerns of the urban poor by facilitating equitable access
to available health facilities and strengthening the existing capacity of the
health delivery system.
An update mentioned that it will serve as the focal point
for preventive, promotive, and basic curative healthcare, not only by providing
medical care through outpatient services but also by operating and managing
outreach sessions, special camps, home visits by ANMs, and community
mobilisation through ASHAs.
Dr. Supongmenla Walling, chief medical officer of Mon, said
in her keynote speech that the new UPHC building is under construction and the
facility will operate on a rental basis for a few more days.
She stated that the facility will be staffed by a total of
eight people, including one medical officer, two GNMs, three ANMs, one lab
technician, and one pharmacist. She described the facility as a comprehensive
healthcare system that will bring preventive and palliative treatment closer to
the community.
She stated that urban ASHAs will be appointed shortly in Mon
town and will play an important role in reaching the unreached. She urged the
community to support the staff and the health unit to ensure the institution
runs smoothly.
In marking the day, the guest of honour, Ajit Kumar Verma,
DC Mon, stated that the inauguration of the UPHC is a significant milestone for
the district and praised the medical department for taking the initiative.
He also praised the government for providing a gift through
the medical department to the people of Mon. He stated that the operation of
the institution is not only the duty of the medical department but also of
significant community members who, by taking responsibility for running the
facility, will help the institution succeed.
