Diphu, Nov. 25 (EMN): Signing of Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) on Nov. 25, 2011 between the Karbi millitant United Peoples Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) and central government of India and the State government is a historic day for the Karbi Community.
This day cannot be forgotten, it is one of the greatest day for the Karbi people and that one has to commemorate this day in days to come while keeping it alive. This was stated by Karbi Cultural Society (KCS), President, Chandra Sing Kro, who attended as the Chief guest during the 6th commemoration day of MoS signing day held at Ex-UPDS welfare society office premises on Sat.
He also urged the cadres to be like the past while discouraging them to hold guns but instead should be involved in the societal life for the upliftment of the society.
Former Deputy Chairman, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Kangjang Terang who was once the leader of UPDS said, ‘we should never be saddened on the delay implementation of MoS by the government rather we will pressurize the authority of KAAC, state and central government for fully implementation of MoS Accord in the days to come.’ He said there are two parts in the MoS accord with one towards economic issues and the other on political issues. Stressing on which he said the implementation towards economic issues are in progress but it is seen that there is misuse of fund like overlapping of road construction. The present KAAC government is misusing the fund of MoS Accord, added Terang.
He also said, out of the alloted amount of Rs. 3500 crores for the economic package of MoS atleast five crores should be given to the UPDS cadres as there is less chance for the cadres to indulge in anti-social activities, now the UPDS cadres are facing hardship due to the delay implementation of MoS Accord.
Concerning the political issues, Terang said that the KAAC government is keeping aside the political issues whenever the KAAC government conducts MoS review meeting while expressing that there no official information is given to the organisation on the said matter.
Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA), Public Relations Officer, L. Hansing who attended the event as a guest expressed his support towards UPDS and sought support to work together in unity for the development of the region by standing together for its all round development.
The commemoration program was presided by its Chairman/ President, Ex-UPDS Social Welfare Society, Longsodar Singnar.
More than 200 cadres including former leaders of UPDS attended the event.
Mention can be made the UPDS was formed with two conglomerate of Karbi Peoples Front (KPF) and Karbi National Volunteers (KNV) in 1999 and in May 23, 2002. UPDS took cease fire and finally MoS Accord was signed between the Central and State government on Nov. 25, 2011.
As per the information given by its Finance Secretary, Umrong Terang, there are 320 cadres at present.
