The United Naga Tribes Association of Border Areas (UNTABA) has demanded the State government for inclusion of all traditional and ancestral land of the Nagas that were arbitrarily and systematically transferred to Assam by the then British Government of India way back from 19th Century while resolving the vexed border problems with Assam. “The approximate areas roughly cover an area of 4,974.16 square miles or equivalent to 12,883.07 square kilometers still lying under Assam, the record of which is readily available with the Department of Border Affairs, Government of Nagaland,” UNTABA chairman, Hukavi T. Yepthomi and joint secretary, Yanger Sangtam in a letter to State chief minister said.
While appreciating various initiatives undertaken by the government of Nagaland towards resolution of the vexed border problems with Assam, UNTABA also expressed its serious apprehension that unless the government of Nagaland considers practical step then, coming generations might never forgive for failing to uphold and safeguard the history of Naga ancestors and that posterity would judge for bartering ancestral land.
The association therefore demanded the authority to consider the appeal ‘so as to right the historical wrongs committed to our people by the foreign rulers of the bygone days.’
