IMPHAL, July 26 (EMN): Around 19 buffaloes were reported to have died due to some ‘unknown disease’ in a remote hilly village in Manipur’s Senapati district bordering Nagaland in the north, official sources said on Thursday.
The dead animals were spotted around 11:30 am to 12 noon at Thingba Khunou village, about 105 km north of Imphal on Wednesday, sources said. However, the villagers had informed the district veterinary authorities at the Senapati district headquarters on Thursday morning.
Reports reaching here claimed that the buffaloes belonging to around 9 families of the village were kept at a particular place of the village in view of the plantation season. But all of them were found dead on Wednesday.
We’ve sent out people to the village and collected some samples. So we will conduct necessary examination soon, says a senior veterinary officer stationed at Senapati district headquarters when contacted over phone.
Meanwhile, some of the experts when sought their comment, felt that the reason behind yesterday’s incident could be because of food poisoning. At the same time, some reports claimed that the incident occurred after some of the buffaloes consume water from a pond.
With the outbreak of unknown disease, the final confirmation of the cause would be made known after the conduct of necessary examination of the collected samples.
