Dimapur, Oct. 28 (EMN): Students at the Lumami campus of Nagaland University are furious that the internet service in their area is in poor shape. The Nagaland University Students’ Union (Nusu) issued a press release on Sunday complaining against the ‘net connection services provided to the Nagaland University headquarters’ by state-owned BSNL, Mokokchung circle.
‘The Nusu expresses its strong resentment over the deplorable net connection services provided to the Nagaland University at Lumami by the state owned BSNL, Mokokchung circle, hampering the academic growth of the students and disrupting the functioning of the university at large,’ the union stated.
‘In this era of hyper connected world where the whole country and the world in general is heading towards a digital world, it is melancholic (sic) that BSNL is dragging down and pushing the highest institute of education in the state, Nagaland University, towards a primitive age,’ the group complained.
The union is said to be in touch with officials of the BSNL ‘apprising them of the inconveniences faced by the students and the whole university in general.’ However, there is no improvement in their services, the union stated.
The press release read: ‘Moreover the connection isn’t available daily. It’ll be there for a day or two and unavailable for 3-4 days at a stretch. In addition, the net speed is also very slow which was apprised to the officials of BSNL, but no positive development was made on their end to rectify these. Further it not only affects the headquarters at Lumami but also the campus at Medziphema (SASRD) since the connection goes from Lumami to SASRD, thus paralyzing both the campuses.’
“Every office, departments, library have adequate number of computers each equipped by LAN cables but since net connection isn’t available most of the work is done manually. The union is further shocked to learn that even to verify the scholarship forms at the National Scholarship Portal the university is at the pity (sic) of the BSNL’s deplorable net service,” the union explained.
The students are unable to access internet facilities, access content through Swayam, National Digital Library etc., the union stated. It is hampering the students’ academics, the union complained.
“Nowadays where everything is online right from the admissions, filling up forms, payments, accessing educational and informative journals, texts, lectures etc., it is only creating hurdles in the students’ life,” the press release read.
Vowing to stand and safeguard the interest of the students, the BSNL is told to improve its services at the earliest. If the company fails to do, there would be ‘further course of action for which the concerned officials would be solely held responsible,’ the union cautioned.
“The Nusu (L) would accept nothing short than the connection being available 24x7, 365 days, improved net speed in par with other central universities. Further, the Nusu (L) would like to request the university’s authority that if BSNL could not fulfil it, then blacklist BSNL, search for other remedial services and to speed up the ongoing Wi-Fi services work,” the statement added.
