Dimapur, Jan. 20 (EMN): To spread awareness among students and public regarding road safety, traffic rules and etiquettes, Unity College observed the 31st National Road Safety Week 2020 on the theme “Bringing change through youth power” from January 11 to the 17th.
As road safety is a major concern for drivers as well as pedestrians, the college observed the national road safety week in an attempt to build a safer India, stated an update from the college.
On the first day, 15 NCC cadets organised a street play in the college campus. The play was based on the theme “Slow and steady wins the race,” through which the cadets encouraged the audience to follow traffic rules, drive with caution and reminded them that many people have lost their lives due to reckless, rash driving and non-compliance of traffic rules and regulations.
In another programme, NSS unit of the college conducted a road safety programme in which Zubenthung Ngullie, SDO (C) Dimapur Sardar, administered the pledge on road safety. In the same programme, ABSI Toshi Aier from Dimapur traffic delivered a talk on road safety and appealed to all the students/volunteers to spread awareness among the people on safe driving.
It stated that the college had conferred “Good Samaritan Award, 2020” to the Dimapur traffic police in appreciation of their selfless service rendered to the people and the community and to Nika K Yepthomi, NSS member of the college.
In another event Rahgiri – walkathon rally, was also initiated by NSS from the college campus to Industrial Estate, Lingrijan. A total of 60 NSS volunteers and two programme officers participated in the event. The volunteers covered the stretch with banners and placards spreading the message to the people around.
The Eco Club of the college also conducted “Tree of remembrance,” an activity in which the students selected a prominent tree in the college campus and decorated it with road traffic signs, seat belts, helmets, and other relevant materials related to road safety and traffic. The purpose of the activity was to draw attention of the passersby to spread the message on road safety.
Besides, social activities committee of IQAC organised “Munna Bhai Campaign.” A total of 33 students along with three faculty under the supervision of Toshi Aier and his team undertook the campaign from the college campus till Clock Tower junction.
During the campaign, students with the help of the traffic police team checked and stopped the traffic rule violators and handed roses by stressing upon to follow the traffic rules.
Meanwhile, Young Indians (Yuva) unit of the college organised a “Helmet awareness rally,” which was flagged off from the college campus to various points of the city. Around 75 students including teachers undertook the rally carrying placards with awareness messages about safe driving and prevention of head injuries.
A brainstorming event on the “Safe India Ideathon” was also conducted during the week-long programme in which the students presented their views on different problems related to road safety. A first responder training workshop was also conducted where students were given basic training in case of road accidents.
Kohima police organises on-road seminar
On the occasion of 31st national road safety week, Kohima police conducted various exercise on January 18 including on-road seminar for two wheeler taxi riders and four wheeler taxi drivers at Razhu point and PHQ junctions respectively.
A report from the Kohima police PRO stated that riders and drivers were made known on the importance of road safety rules in preventing accidents leading to grievous injuries or death of drivers, passengers and pedestrians. Pamphlets on road safety were also distributed to commuters in all major police points.
To positively encourage two wheeler riders to wear helmets, Kohima police donated helmets to defaulters and briefed them on the importance of wearing helmets for their safety.
