Ungma, Dec. 17 (EMN): The 26
th United Soyim Club Ungma (USC) badminton tournament 2018 got underway at Ungma village on Monday evening. More than 50 participants from around Mokokchung are participating in the tournament.
The tournament was officially declared open by O Tinu Longkumer, Tatar as the guest of honour. In his address, Longkumer lauded the USC for their dedication, wisdom and vision for popularising and promoting the game of badminton for the past many years.
He asserted that this tournament is one of the oldest tourneys in the village and the players who participated in this tourney have brought laurels both at national and international events.
In this connection, he urged that participants that they should not only focus on winning their respective categories but they should also take this opportunity to test their sportsmanship spirit.
He also said the village council give importance in promoting youths in every activity because they believed that if the present generation guides the younger generation in the right direction than the upcoming generation will be a fruitful one who would do better than their predecessor for the welfare of the people.
“The future lies in the present,” Longkumer asserted.
The village leader also wondered why there is less number of youths who could crack NPSC, UPSC and allied examinations among the Ungma citizens and urged the people, the village council members and church to ponder upon this issue seriously.
The tournament will be played under eight categories- Miniature Boys’ Singles, Miniature Boys’ Doubles, U-17 boys singles, U-17 boys Doubles, Men’s doubles, Girls’ Singles, Veteran Singles, and mixed doubles. The tourney will culminate on Dec. 20. In the inaugural match, Sukumer beat Imkongnochet 21-5, 21-11 in U-12 category.
