Union Minister JP Nadda visits disaster-hit Mon, announces Central relief team and assures full support for rehabilitation and restoration efforts.
DIMAPUR — Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Chemicals and Fertilisers JP Nadda on Wednesday visited landslide- and flood-hit Mon district, announced that a Central relief team would soon assess the damage and assured all possible financial assistance from the government of India for relief, rehabilitation and restoration.
Nadda, who was accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak and Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal, inspected the affected areas, met bereaved families and interacted with displaced residents at the Konyak Union office.
Addressing the gathering, the Union minister described the devastation caused by the recent landslides and floods as a matter of "deep sorrow", saying the tragedy had claimed lives, displaced families and caused extensive damage to infrastructure.
"I can understand your pain," he said, adding that he comes from a hilly region and was familiar with the challenges posed by landslides and extreme weather.
Announcing that a Central relief team would visit Mon shortly, Nadda assured that the Centre would provide all necessary support.
"The government of India will leave no stone unturned in extending the required assistance," he said, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and deputed him to personally review the relief efforts.
Nadda also said that he had been in constant touch with Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton and Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak to monitor the situation.
He commended the Nagaland government, district administration, Konyak Union and Konyak Students' Union for carrying out relief operations and assisting affected families.
"I appreciate the district administration for working on a war footing and the Konyak Union and Konyak Students' Union for actively participating in relief efforts," he said.
During the visit, the district administration and Konyak Union presented detailed reports, photographs and videos documenting the scale of destruction caused by landslides and flash floods across Mon district.
According to the Konyak Union, the reports outlined the loss of lives, destruction of homes, public infrastructure and the wider impact of the disaster on communities.
The deputy commissioner of Mon informed the Union minister that state ministers were unable to accompany him because persistent rain in Kohima prevented their helicopter from taking off.
Following the visit, Nadda posted on social media that he had inspected the affected areas, met bereaved families and assured displaced residents of the Centre's continued support for relief and rehabilitation.
In a separate statement, the Konyak Union thanked the Union minister for visiting the district during the crisis and expressed hope that the assurances made by the Centre would translate into timely relief, rehabilitation and long-term restoration measures.
