Union Health Minister JP Nadda agrees to upgrade RIMS Imphal to AIIMS status and approves a new medical college in Senapati.
IMPHAL — The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has agreed to upgrade the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal to the status of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
The decision was shared by Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda during a meeting with Chief Minister of Manipur Yumnam Khemchand Singh in New Delhi on August 31.
RIMS is currently the only medical college in the Northeast and West Bengal to figure among the top 40 medical institutions and universities in India in recent years, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework of the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
The 55-year-old institute has one of the highest postgraduate intake capacities in the country, with nearly 150 candidates across 25 disciplines. Since its establishment, RIMS has produced more than 3,500 doctors, 1,850 specialist doctors, 200 BSc nursing graduates, and 150 dental surgeons. Out-patient department attendance at the facility has also risen to more than 7.67 lakh patients.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh expressed his gratitude to the Union Health Minister for his focus on improving the healthcare sector in the state. JP Nadda also agreed to approve a proposal for the establishment of a new medical college in the Senapati district of Manipur.
